Beginning Spinning
Class Description:
Class 1 is learning about the wheel, it's operation, building muscle memory treadling while I rattle on about spinning and history. We discuss selecting fibers using analyzing and attenuation of fibers. Students learn to make a "single"; and add the hand operation using a variety of fiber preparations and learn about control and consistency. Homework is to fill two bobbins equally either on their own wheel or returning to the Boarding House to fill equally the bobbins for class 2.

Class 2 we focus on the plying operation. We discover how to achieve balanced yarn and how to finish and store our yarn. Homework is to ply and finish their yarn to show at the next class.

Class 3 is a lecture class that prepares students to attend a fiber fair and purchase and prepare their own fibers. We explore many different fibers, discover faults, and experience washing fiber. Students are introduced to fiber prep tools and how to use
them and the forms they produce and the yarns they can make.
